The IRIX 6.5 Applications CD, May 2002 is a companion to IRIX 6.5.16. This CD contains the IRIX Desktop and various desktop applications. It replaces all previous IRIX 6.5 Applications CDs (June 1998 through November 2001).

Application upgrades shipped with IRIX releases are either Full images or Overlays. Updates to Full images are found on the Applications CD whereas updated Overlays are found on the IRIX 6.5.16 Overlays, May 2002 CD. Additional applications can be found on the Base IRIX 6.5.16 CDs. To install the new versions of Overlay applications you must install IRIX 6.5.16.

IMPORTANT 6.5.16 Apps CD NOTE:
Because the .related_dists file has been removed from the IRIX 6.5.16 Apps CD distribution, users may not be aware of the /CDROM/dist/dev and /CDROM/dist/extras directories. To access these use the "Open" option in Software Manager.

Other Changes

• License Tools changed from being an overlay image to being a full image.
• Several IRIX products have been retired and removed from the Applications CD. These products are IRISAnnotator, InPerson, PeoplePages, and SGI Photoshop Performance Pack.
• Two Isogon products (formerly Gradient Technologies), LicensePower/iFOR IS4.0.1 CRK and LicensePower/iFOR IS4.0.1 ARK have been removed from the IRIX Applications CD. Customers interested in updates to these products should contact Isogon directly.
• Netscape FastTrack Server has also been removed from the IRIX Applications CD. This product's functionality has been superseded by SGI Web Server based on Apache. Customers with previous versions of Netscape FastTrack Server from 6.5 and above can continue to use the product.

Important Notes About the Products

• Netscape Communicator Client
  Netscape Communicator Client 4.79 is part of the default distribution on this CD. Customers who only use the browser functionality (and not the email, newsgroups, etc.) may prefer to install the Netscape Navigator Client (netscape_lite) 4.79. From Software Manager, open /CDROM/dist/extras to install this product.

  Beginning with Netscape 4.75 the default browser is compiled N32 so existing Third party Netscape plugins will not work with the new N32 browser. Several plugins do exist in N32 versions. Depending on which plugins you depend on you may want to install the O32 version of the browser. These are in non-default installed subsystems of netscape and netscape_lite.

Release Notes

If you choose to read the release notes for products before installing new products, you can now view the release notes easily from Software Manager. From the desktop Toolchest choose System, then Software Manager. This will bring up the Software Manager window. Choose to Customize Installation but typing /CDROM/dist into the Available Software box. A list of products available for installation will come up. If the product name is highlighted (similar to an HTML link) then there are Release Notes available. Simply click on the link to bring up the Release Notes window.
